Statement
I have always struggled with my own identity. I went to school for Computer Science, then switched to Computer Animation, and then to Visual Studies. For me, I was always drifting along, unsure of what I wanted. All I knew was that I liked to solve puzzles and make beautiful things. Hanorimo is the culmination of years of uncertainty and self-exploration.
My research and critical thinking revolved around the Chinese graphic design scene. It was a view of a world that I was both unfamiliar, yet intimately acquainted with through my background. I chose to research this due to the fact that my racial background had always influenced my work and everyday life, so I decided to dive even deeper into the history and evolving scene of Chinese graphic design. I found that many art forms, not just graphic design, are now changing to cater to the Chinese population, as China has grown to be such a large and vital part of our global economy.
Inspired by my research, Hanorimo is a mix of Chinese concepts and Western graphic design, a reflection of my own identity. I chose the Chinese legend of the rabbit on the moon to theme my identity around. The rabbit toils away on the moon, creating elixirs of immortality for the goddess of the moon, Chang’e. I developed Hanorimo’s brand identity around this concept of modernizing the rabbits on the moon, incorporating traditional Chinese imagery into my planning but with a modern twist.
My thesis focuses on the art of branding design and identity development. It features a thoroughly detailed standards manual, business cards, and a themed resume. The central product will be the standards manual, which will detail the conceptualization of Hanorimo as a brand and identity, as well as the information needed to represent the brand correctly.
Hanorimo’s Logo
Created for my thesis, a personal branding project.
The name Hanorimo is adapted from my own name combined with marimo.
I created business cards, a resume, and a 12 page branding manual for the project.
Other creations include the development of my logo and a personal mascot.
I tried to showcase my illustration ability alongside my design sense and style.
